The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on Tuesday denied immediate relief to Vodafone Idea over its petition challenging Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) order on withholding its RedX plan. The third largest cellular provider in India moved TDSAT on Monday seeking a relief order against the Trai directive that required Vodafone Idea to stop providing its premium RedX plan to users. The Trai in a letter dated June 11 is said to have sent identical orders to Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel asking the operators to stop premium plans that promised “faster speeds” to users....

A BBMP official told PTI that it was disconnecting only those optical fibre cables which were unauthorised. “We have incurred huge financial losses because of the unauthorised cables. Several times we had warned the telecom companies to get the cables regularised and should be laid in as per regulations, but they ignored our warnings. We were left with no option but to disconnect them,” the officer said. 5G networks are being deployed rapidly worldwide. A few months back, telecom operators were just finishing the 5G trials and waiting for the final deployment. Recently, the largest mobile network and third-largest fixed telecommunications company in Bulgaria, Telenor Bulgaria, has deployed 5G networks in more than 60 locations. Telenor Bulgaria assured its subscribers the previous month and stated that the 5G network would be deployed in June. Trai has dismissed the rule which made it compulsory for a telecom operator to provide 100 SMSes at a discounted rate and charge 50 paise per SMS. As stated by Trai, the tariff regulation rule which can affect the interest of genuine non-commercial bulk users of SMSes is no longer necessary, and it can be removed. The move by Trai is also another step towards firming the regime of tariff forbearance....

Trai Seeks Stakeholder Views on Regulating of Tariff for SMS To recall, Trai started limiting 100 SMSes per day from 2012, and for every SMS sent after the daily limit, users will be charged at least 50 paise per SMS. Trai introduced the 100 SMSes per day limit to adequately protect the telecom subscribers from the menace of unsolicited commercial communication (UCC). This was in-line with Trai’s measures to curb UCC....

Telecom Watchdog, a non-profit organisation (NGO), said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) must look at the base prepaid tariffs that offer SMS benefits to consumers. The NGO wrote a letter to the regulator calling out the prepaid tariff hikes from Vodafone Idea (Vi), resulting in the base prepaid tariff with SMS benefit becoming the Rs 179 plan. Telecom Watchdog said that this tariff was very high compared to the competition....

Indus Towers might cut the access of Vodafone idea from its mobile towers if the dues aren’t cleared, said a CNBC-TV18 report. The telco needs to make advance payments to the vendor to keep its access to the towers.
