While the Indian government announced relief measures for the telcos in FY22, it also benefited from the free cash flow that Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio were generating. The government’s revenue from the telecom sector jumped 89% to Rs 85,640 crore in FY22. This largely happened because of the pre-payments of deferred spectrum liabilities from Jio and Airtel. Compared to this, in FY21, the government’s revenue receipts showed an income of Rs 45,401 crore....

Six telephone exchanges have been identified by the Karnataka Police and Military Intelligence (Southern Command) which were illegally converting international calls to local calls. As per an IANS report, it was an illegal network that was made to spy on the Indian Army. Two accused males from Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been arrested by the police on June 7, 2021. Vodafone Idea Asks for Extra Time to Submit Details Not only Bharti Airtel but also other telcos, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea will also be asked for more details during the ongoing examination of information on segmented offers. It is worth noting that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel had submitted the details on segmented offers to the sector regulator by the April 25 deadline, but the market leader Vodafone Idea had asked for 15 more days to provide the same details given the recent merger between Vodafone India and Idea Cellular which together presently form the telecom giant....

Telecom operators in India face the heat yet again from Trai as the regulator slaps around Rs 35 crore penalty for allowing cybercriminals to send fake SMSes to the subscribers which led to digital payment frauds. The top telcos have distorted the volume of spam calls and messages on their networks, says Trai according to ET Telecom. The highest penalty of Rs 30.1 crore was levied on the government-owned BSNL....

More FTA Channels in Initial NCF Slab Likely to Bring Back Subscribers After the new Trai tariff regime, almost every subscriber complained of increased TV subscription. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper to understand the market structure and competition in cable television (TV) services. Verizon, an American telecom operator, is finally killing its 3G network. The company has confirmed the last date for its 3G network to be the last day of 2022. Verizon isn’t stopping its 3G network right away because several people in the US are still using 3G devices, and the transition to devices that support 4G LTE or 5G will take some time.
