Bharti Airtel Opposes Recommend Spectrum Pricing Trai’s statement gained significance as earlier this month, Bharti Airtel, mentioned that they would not participate in the auction if the base price is fixed at Rs 492 crore per megahertz as recommended by the telecom regulator. When asked about the statement given by Bharti Airtel, the chairman of Trai, RS Sharma noted that the entire decision of auction depends upon the government and apparently, they have accepted the reserve prices....

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is looking to conduct a special audit on the telcos in India to check whether they were offering differential tariffs through the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) route. Back in 2021, TRAI had released a directive which said that the telcos along with their channel partners can’t make differential tariff offers for attracting customers through the MNP route. According to an ET report, the audit from TRAI would be focused on finding whether the telcos are engaging in discriminatory offerings which are against the rules around pricing....

It has been confirmed that Twitter, the largest micro-blogging platform in the world, was sold to Elon Musk for a $44 billion deal on Monday. Musk wants the platform to give users the freedom of speech, which he believes is lacking for now. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is allowing users to send SMS if they are on a talktime pack. Note that the same hasn’t been confirmed by the company but by a TelecomTalk community member, verified by me. Vi offers quite expensive SMS prepaid packs compared to what Jio and Airtel are offering to their users. However, this had limited the ability of low-income users to send SMS for porting out of Vi’s network....

Government Disbands CoS The government official remarked on this, “They (telcos) have been given a two-year moratorium (from spectrum payment), they’ve got relief of Rs 42,000 crore.” As per the government official, the telecom operators should not expect anything more from the government in terms of relief. On posing a question about whether or not the CoS has been disbanded, the government official replied in affirmative. The government official in question also said that another inter-ministerial panel could not be appointed to discuss the relief measures for the Rs 1....

The tussle between Trai and Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) is still going on. Back on August 25, Trai had issued a show-cause notice to the telco in regards to its RedX premium tariff plan. Now Trai has extended the date for Vodafone Idea Limited for responding to the show cause notice till September 8. This is not the first time the date has been extended though. Initially, the date set by Trai for responding was August 31, 2020, but it was later extended to September 4....

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has got another relief of Rs 408 crore. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal’s (ITAT) Mumbai bench has allowed the telco’s claim for depreciation on the spectrum fee it paid during FY15, reports ET Telecom. Vodafone India, before it merged with Idea Cellular, had declared a total income of more than Rs 4,350 crore for the assessment year 2015-16 and claimed depreciation of Rs 1,628.48 crore at 25% on the spectrum fee it had paid....
